What is IPL Therapy?

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy is a form of light therapy that uses a broad spectrum of light to target various skin issues. Unlike lasers, which emit a single wavelength, IPL releases light of multiple wavelengths, allowing it to reach different layers of the skin. This makes it exceptionally effective for treating a wide range of skin conditions over relatively large areas of skin.

How Does IPL Work?

IPL works by emitting short bursts of a powerful, broad-spectrum light that penetrates the skin and targets specific skin conditions. Light energy is absorbed by blood vessels and pigment cells in the skin, which are responsible for skin color. This energy is converted to heat, which damages the target cells while leaving the surrounding skin unharmed. Over time, the body’s natural processes remove the injured tissue, giving the skin a more even and youthful appearance.

Conditions Treated with IPL

IPL is highly effective for treating a variety of skin conditions, including:

  • Sun Damage: IPL can reduce the appearance of sunspots and freckles, restoring a more even skin tone.
  • Rosacea: This treatment can diminish the redness associated with rosacea, making it less noticeable.
  • Hyperpigmentation: IPL helps to fade dark spots caused by hyperpigmentation, resulting in clearer skin.
  • Acne Scars: By targeting pigment and promoting collagen production, IPL can reduce the visibility of acne scars.
  • Fine Lines and Wrinkles: The light stimulates collagen production, which can help smooth out fine lines and wrinkles, improving skin texture.

What to Expect During an IPL Treatment

Before the treatment, a consultation with one of our skincare professionals will determine if IPL is the right option for you based on your skin type and goals. During the procedure, you will wear protective eyewear to shield your eyes from the bright flashes of light. A cooling gel is applied to the treatment area to minimize your discomfort and protect your skin.

The IPL device is then moved across your skin, emitting pulses of light. Treatment time can vary depending on the size of the area being treated but typically lasts between 20 to 30 minutes. Most patients experience little to no discomfort during the procedure — often described as a light snap from a rubber band.

Post-Treatment Care and Results

After IPL therapy, you may notice a slight reddening or swelling of the treated area, which usually subsides within a few hours to a day. Over the following weeks, treated pigmented lesions will darken and eventually flake off, and vascular lesions will fade.

Typically, we recommend a series of three to five sessions spaced about one month apart for the best results. During your initial consultation, we will create a personalized treatment plan tailored to your specific skin concerns and desired outcomes.
